Rip Van Winkle was an idler. Everyone
knows the story of how he fell asleep and woke up an old man, but before this
fantastic moment, Rip spent his days loitering among villagers, never tending
to his farm. He took to the mountains to hunt mainly to avoid his wifes
reprimands.
While reclining on a green knoll, on
one of the highest parts of the Catskill mountains, Rip heard someone call his
name. It was a short man dressed in an old-fashioned Dutch clothes carrying a
keg of liquor. He wanted Rip’s help. Rip helped him carry the keg to a
clearing where other man, also dressed in strange Dutch garb from a time past,
were bowling. No one spoke to Rip. They gazed at him like statues, drank from
the keg, then resumed their game.
Rip, when no one was looking, tasted the
strange liqur. It was like a gin, and it soon made Rip fall asleep. When he
woke, he was back on the green knoll, twenty years older. There were no men,
and the clearing was overgrown.
As he made his way home, he saw changes
in the village: new houses, unfamiliar faces, strange dress. It took the oldest
inhabitant of the village to identify him. Rip’s wife had died and his
daughter was a grown woman with a child of her own. He lived with his daughter
